Gone are the days when a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) was used for simply storing
contact information or keeping track of your appointments and tasks. So to are the
days gone when a mobile phone was just used for making and receiving voice calls.
With the new technologies available for us today these devices can be used for more
than what they were origianlly designed for.
Imagine this scenario:
The morning sales meeting has just finished and your sales team before leaving the
building sychronise their PDA's and mobile phones with your inhouse scheduling system
which transfers all their appointments for the day to their respective devices.
John gets in his car and heads out to his first appointment which is purely a courtesy
call and on arriving at the customer he's forgotten that quotation he promised.
Usually he would either turn the car around and go back to the office to pick it
up or phone and ask to fax it through, but instead he now has the power to download
it to his phone or trigger an action that emails it directly to the customer before
he walks in.
He meets with the customer and is asked to provide a quotation on an item which
he forgot to ask John to quote on. John again gets out is phone and searches for
the item and provides the customer with a quote as they speak. The customer decides
to place an order with John for both items, which John selects on his phone and
processes the order immediately which is sent to the office for fulfillment.
He greets his customer and looks up the next appointment on his phone and realises
that while he was in the meeting with his first customer his second call for the
day has phoned the office and cancelled. He picks up his next scheduled appointment
and proceeds to that customer.
Later that day his first customer is out to lunch and suddenly remembers that he
needs to find out if his order has been fulfilled, instead of waiting for the lunch
break to finish so he can phone the office and speak to his employee in goods receiving
he just picks up his phone and connects to the office accounting system and checks
on the delivery of his goods...
This is just one scenario of many where these new technologies can be used to simplify
our lives in the busy world in which we live today, this is no longer science fiction
but science fact.
